Richard Strauss version[]
Also sprach Zarathustra,op.30, is asymphonic poemin 1896 by the German composerRichard Strauss, inspired by the philosophical novelAlso sprach Zarathustrafrom 1883-85 ofFriedrich Nietzsche.The first part is since 1968 famous for the use in the film2001: A Space Odyssey.
The first performance was conducted by the composer in Frankfurt on 27 november 1896.The original subtitle"Symphonischer Optimismus in Fin de Siècle-Form, dem 20.Jahrhundert gewidmet "(" Symphonicoptimisminfin-de-siècle-form, dedicated to the20th century"), an attempt to revise the deep-rootedpessimismof Nietzsche, he changed later in" Tondichtung, frei nach Friedr.Nietzsche "(" tone poem, free to Friedr.Nietzsche ").[1]because he got mixed reviews on a self written accompanying text, he published a quote from the prologue of the book in front of the sheet music.[2]

In a letter to his friendHeinrich Köselitzwrote Nietzsche, who himself was also a composer, in april 1883:"welche dieser Rubrik gehört Unter eigentlich Zarathustra?Ich glaube, beinahe unter which Symphonien ".(In which category Zarathustra hears this actually at home?I believe in a hurry, in the symphonies.)The narrative development in the book would lend itself more to a story without words in patterns.The same idea must have inspired the words of the Strauss fictionalized ProphetZarathustrato translate to music.Mahleralso experimented with the text.
A performance lasts about 33 minutes.Including the introduction consists entirely of nine parts, which are not to be interrupted by breaks.The mention of the parts to chapters from the book is the only indication of their programmatic context:

In themusical programspeaks theCagreement for thenatureand the universe, andBif theagreementsounds of thehumanity.These two tone colors alternate inmajorandminoroff without compromise.[3]the three opening notes C-G-C, played by a brass band of brass on overtones by the basses, forms theMotifof the dawn inintervalsof anoctaveand afifth.The agreement will be completed with amajor thirdon E, but immediately falls back to a minor third to a Es, the first note that is not part of the natural overtone series.The piece concludes with aB majorin the horn section, while the basses play aCis.Neither the man nor theÜbermenschis given the riddle to fathom.[4]
In the partsVon den HinterweltlernVon der großen Sehnsuchtand refers to the traditional Latincreedfrom the Roman Catholic mass, theCredo in unum Deo.Strauss suggests this implied a monotheistic Christian interpretation of the God concept where Nietzsche's Zarathustra issues explicitly to "the gods".[5]

Stanley Kubrickused the introductory theme in 1968 in his film2001: A Space Odysseyas an accompaniment to images of an alien Sunrise, while the earth itself comes up from behind the moon.This scene made the music world famous.The three celestial bodies and the three tones symbolize the Trinity of Es, Ich and Übermensch that a main theme in both Nietzsche as Kubrick.[6]
The melody was used by the British hard rock bandDeep Purpleas an introduction for a live version of the songRiver Deep-Mountain Highduring The Book of Taliesyn Tour in 1968, six months after the release of Kubrick's film.In the 1970 'sElvis Presleyused the piece as the opening music for its concerts.The public heard Strauss while Elvis entered the stage.
The Braziliaanze pop artistDeodatomade in 1972, a successfuljazz rock versionappeared on his albumPreludeandAlso sprach Zarathustraas a single.The song gave him the following year theGrammy Awardfor Best Pop Instrumental Performance.In 1979 Peter Sellers used it in his filmBeing There.

Since the first performance is the piece going to belong to the standard repertoire of classical orchestras.For 1968 belonged, however, not yet up to Strauss ' most played symphonic verses.
Strauss conducted theVienna PhilharmonicIn 1944 for an experimentalhigh-fidelity recordingof the piece on a GermanMagnetophontape recorder.His friend and colleagueFritz Reinerled in March 1954 the first recording instereo, with theChicago Symphony Orchestra.Execution in2001: A Space Odysseyis told in 1959, was recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction ofHerbert von Karajan.

Within the jazz ran the not so hard, butAlso Sprach Zarathustra, that was a mix of latin rock, jazz rock, funk and rock splashed by the single.The handle back on thesoundtrackof2001: A Space Odyssey, where the music of Strauss also told it was.It was a resounding success;In addition, theNetherlandsonly by Deodato.Especially the transition of the impendingagreementthat Strauss had written to the thenswingingmusic was admired.Of course, the song was also reviled;lovers ofclassical musiccould not appreciate it (sometimes), who felt that "weird" operations but nothing.Deodato got there for aGrammy Award.The sale went to above the 5 million copies.
