Can you sit in the back of a truck in Pennsylvania? ›

You can legally ride in the bed of a pickup truck in Pa. under a few conditions. Pennsylvania vehicle code allows for passengers to travel in the open bed of a pickup truck under two main conditions: the truck isn't going faster than 35 mph and the passenger isn't under the age of 18.

In Pennsylvania, the maximum vehicle width is 96 inches. For height, the maximum is 13 feet 6 inches. Maximum vehicle length for any single vehicle is 40 feet.

Wyoming is the state with the most pickup trucks and has 2.2 more pickup trucks on the road than the average state. Known as "the Cowboy State", Wyoming is a Western Rocky Mountain state with plenty of unpaved roads, rugged terrain and harsh winters, all of which require off-road and foul-weather capability.

(a) General rule. --An open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck may not be driven at a speed of more than 35 miles per hour if any person is occupying the bed of the truck. (1) Such a truck may not be driven at any speed if a child less than 18 years of age is occupying the bed of the truck or trailer.

Act 124 also prohibits the owners and operators of locations where subject vehicles load, unload, or park from allowing the engine of the vehicle to idle for more than five minutes in any continuous 60-minute period, except as provided in the act.

You won't need to worry about legal restrictions on riding in the back of a pickup truck if you're in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia or Wyoming.

Some have no law against it, others prohibit it unless there are seats with seat belts to secure passengers. Several states get very specific about bed laws, such as California, where people can ride in the back of a truck if the vehicle is used on a farm or in a parade where the vehicles do not exceed more than 8mph.

While it may be legal to ride in the back of a truck, the decision to do so may put your life in danger. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), passengers riding unrestrained in the beds of pickup trucks die more frequently than in any other type of vehicle.

Children ages eight (8) and older, but under age 18 must be buckled in a seat belt, no matter where they ride in the vehicle (front or back seat). Drivers are responsible for securing children into an approved child passenger restraint system and ensuring children under age 18 are buckled up.
