Hanksville is the closest, providing basic amenities for a comfortable stay. Caineville, though small, offers a few charming spots to rest. Torrey, a bit farther away, has more options, including bed and breakfasts and small hotels.
While you might not exactly be spoilt for choice, there are more than enough options to provide a perfect base for your adventure into the stunning landscapes of Moonscape Overlook.

You Don’t Need a 4×4 To Get to Moonscape Overlook
I didn’t need a 4×4 to get around this area. That being said, the roads around the overlook are dirt roads, and some of them can be bumpy. You do need a car with decent clearance to avoid any mishaps.
Don’t Walk Too Close to the Edge
The edge of the overlook is not as stable as it might appear. Practice extreme caution; sadly, some people have died trying to get good pictures.
Be Prepared for No Cell Service
Unless you’re lucky enough to bring a mobile WiFi device, calls and internet access are likely not going to happen while at Moonscape Overlook. Save your directions on how to leave, and ensure a loved one knows your whereabouts.
Check Local Weather Forecasts
If it rained recently, that means mud, possible flash floods, and soft ground. This also means you run the risk of getting stuck on the road. Check beforehand if it will rain during your visit. Thunderstorms and high wind speeds also pose a danger due to the lack of shelter at the overlook.
Practice Patience
Due to the overlook’s increasing popularity, the area can sometimes get crowded. Be mindful of others and try to be patient.
Be aware of other drones if you use one, especially during the early mornings and late afternoon. It’s one of the busiest times of day, and you definitely don’t want to have a drone collision.
Be Prepared
This spot is off-the-beaten-track, so make sure you plan well. Aside from packing essentials, bring enough water and food. There are zero facilities out here, so make sure you bring everything you need, like extra layers and toilet paper. Ensure that while camping and walking around here, you leave no trace.

The best time of year to visit Moonscape Overlook is probably during the cooler months of spring and fall. Temperatures are milder, and the landscape is ablaze with color. Spring, particularly April and May, showcases the blooming desert flora. While fall, from September to November, features a contrast of stunning autumn hues against the rugged terrain.
As for the best time of day, sunrise and sunset are prime times to experience the ethereal beauty of Moonscape Overlook. Camping at Moonscape Overlook is a delightful option for adventurers seeking an overnight stay in the wild outdoors. Since it’s situated on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, camping here is not only allowed but also free and unreserved.
Choosing to camp out here means you can see the sun rise and set and experience the play of light over the formations as the day progresses. The area is pretty open, though, so if it’s windy or raining, you’ll have little to no protection from the elements. The ground can get quite muddy after it rains, so be careful if you visit during wet weather.
While the camping area itself doesn’t offer facilities like designated campsites, restrooms, or picnic tables, the vast expanse of land provides ample opportunities for setting up tents or RVs. However, it’s essential to come prepared with your own water, food, and camping equipment, as amenities are nonexistent in this remote area.
