Why is Haydn's symphony called the Surprise symphony? ›

It is known as the “Surprise” Symphony because of the startling loud chord that occurs in the 2nd movement! This loud chord occurs amongst very soft dynamics and seems out of place within the melody. Haydn was known to include musical jokes into his music, and this is a great example of that.

Beethoven was horrified - and he never forgot Haydn's criticism. (Ironically musicologists today rate the Third as the best of the three!) There was no falling-out between the two, but Beethoven was always quick to criticise his old teacher. He once said, "I never learned anything from Haydn."

Today, all six are still widely referred to by their monikers—the “Surprise” Symphony, the “Military” Symphony, the “Clock” Symphony, to name just a few. The case of Haydn's Symphony No. 104, more popularly known as the “London” Symphony, is rather peculiar.

"Papa Haydn" started out as a term of affection bestowed on Haydn by the musicians who worked for him. After 1766 Haydn was the Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court, presiding over a fairly large group of musicians.
